.SH DESCRIPTION
1986-12-04 19:14:11 -05:00
.I Tzset
uses the value of the environment variable
.B TZ
to set time conversion information used by
1986-11-15 20:19:38 -05:00
.IR localtime .
1987-02-21 11:59:23 -05:00
If
1986-12-04 19:14:11 -05:00
.B TZ
1987-02-21 11:59:23 -05:00
does not appear in the environment,
the best available approximation to local wall clock time is used by
.IR localtime .
If
.B TZ
1987-02-28 18:42:29 -05:00
appears in the environment but its value is a null string,
1988-01-25 10:52:20 -05:00
Greenwich Mean Time is used (without leap second correction);
1987-02-28 18:42:29 -05:00
if
.B TZ
appears and
1986-02-15 15:51:49 -05:00
begins with a slash,
it is used as the absolute pathname of the
.IR tzfile (5)-format
1986-03-06 09:33:04 -05:00
file from which to read the time conversion information;
1986-02-15 15:51:49 -05:00
if
1987-02-21 11:59:23 -05:00
.B TZ
1987-02-28 18:42:29 -05:00
appears and
1987-02-21 11:59:23 -05:00
begins with a character other than a slash,
1987-02-28 18:42:29 -05:00
it's used as a pathname relative to a system time conversion information
1986-12-04 19:14:11 -05:00
directory.
1986-02-15 15:51:49 -05:00
.PP
1986-12-16 15:25:31 -05:00
.I Tzsetwall
sets things up so that
.I localtime
returns the best available approximation of local wall clock time.
.PP
1986-12-04 19:14:11 -05:00
.I Ctime\^
converts a long integer, pointed to by
.IR clock ,
representing the time in seconds since
00:00:00 GMT, January 1, 1970,
and returns a pointer to a
26-character string
of the form
.br
.ce
1989-02-27 09:54:19 -05:00
.eo
Thu Nov 24 18:22:48 1986\n\0
.ec
1986-12-04 19:14:11 -05:00
.br
All the fields have constant width.
.PP
.IR Localtime\^
1986-11-24 18:46:56 -05:00
and
1986-12-04 19:14:11 -05:00
.I gmtime\^
return pointers to ``tm'' structures, described below.
.I Localtime\^
corrects for the time zone and any time zone adjustments
1988-01-25 10:52:20 -05:00
(such as Daylight Saving Time in the U.S.A.).
1989-02-27 09:54:19 -05:00
Before doing so,
1986-12-04 19:14:11 -05:00
.I localtime\^
1986-02-15 15:51:49 -05:00
calls
1986-12-04 19:14:11 -05:00
.I tzset\^
1987-02-21 11:59:23 -05:00
(if
1986-12-04 19:14:11 -05:00
.I tzset\^
1989-02-27 09:54:19 -05:00
has not been called in the current process).
1986-12-04 19:14:11 -05:00
After filling in the ``tm'' structure,
.I localtime
1986-11-24 18:46:56 -05:00
sets the
.BR tm_isdst 'th
element of
1986-11-22 19:03:42 -05:00
.B tzname
1986-02-15 15:51:49 -05:00
to a pointer to an
ASCII string that's the time zone abbreviation to be used with
1986-11-15 20:19:38 -05:00
.IR localtime 's
1986-02-15 15:51:49 -05:00
return value.
.PP
1986-12-04 19:14:11 -05:00
.I Gmtime\^
converts to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).
1986-11-24 18:46:56 -05:00
.PP
1986-12-04 19:14:11 -05:00
.I Asctime\^
converts a time value contained in a
``tm'' structure to a 26-character string,
as shown in the above example,
and returns a pointer
to the string.
.PP
1989-02-27 09:54:19 -05:00
.I Mktime\^
converts the broken-down time,
expressed as local time,
in the structure pointed to by
.I tm
into a calendar time value with the same encoding as that of the values
returned by the
.I time
function.
The original values of the
.PP
.B tm_wday
and
.B tm_yday
components of the structure are ignored,
and the original values of the other components are not restricted
to their normal ranges.
(A positive or zero value for
.B tm_isdst
causes
.I mktime
to presume initally that Daylight Saving Time,
respectively,
is or is not in effect for the specified time.
A negative value for
.B tm_isdst
causes the
.I mktime
function to attempt to divine whether Daylight Saving Time is in effect
for the specified time.)
On successful completion, the values of the
.B tm_wday
and
.B tm_yday
components of the structure are set appropriately,
and the other components are set to represent the specified calendar time,
but with their values forced to their normal ranges; the final value of
.B tm_mday
is not set until
.B tm_mon
and
.B tm_year
are determined.
.I Mktime\^
returns the specified calendar time;
If the calendar time cannot be represented,
it returns
.BR -1 .
.PP
1989-02-24 18:56:54 -05:00
.I Difftime\^
returns the difference between two calendar times,
.I time1
-
.IR time0,
expressed in seconds.
.PP
1986-12-04 19:14:11 -05:00
Declarations of all the functions and externals, and the ``tm'' structure,
are in the
.B <time.h>\^
header file.
1987-02-28 18:42:29 -05:00
The structure (of type)
.B struct tm
includes the following fields:
1986-12-04 19:14:11 -05:00

1987-02-28 18:42:29 -05:00
The
.I tm_zone
and
.I tm_gmtoff
fields exist, and are filled in, only if arrangements to do
so were made when the library containing these functions was
created.
There is no guarantee that these fields will continue to exist
in this form in future releases of this code.
.PP
1986-12-04 19:14:11 -05:00
.I Tm_isdst\^
is non-zero if a
1988-01-25 10:52:20 -05:00
time zone adjustment such as Daylight Saving Time
1986-12-04 19:14:11 -05:00
is in effect.
1987-02-28 18:42:29 -05:00
.PP
.I Tm_gmtoff
is the offset (in seconds) of the time represented
from GMT, with positive values indicating East
of Greenwich.

.SH NOTE
1986-12-04 19:14:11 -05:00
The return values point to static data
whose content is overwritten by each call.
1987-02-28 18:42:29 -05:00
The
.B tm_zone
field of a returned
.B "struct tm"
points to a static array of characters, which
will also be overwritten at the next call
(and by calls to
.I tzset
or
.IR tzsetwall ).
